Leeum Museum of Art in Hannam-dong announced on the 23rd that artist Lee Wan, 35, has been selected as the first recipient of the newly established ‘ARTSPECTRUM Award’, created to commemorate the museum’s 10th anniversary.

After graduating from Dongguk University’s Department of Sculpture in 2004, Lee Wan has actively presented his work through numerous solo exhibitions (seven in total) and group exhibitions.

For this year’s 《ARTSPECTRUM》 exhibition, Lee Wan presented the ‘Made In’ project, which began with the idea of personally creating “a single breakfast meal.”

As part of the project, he traveled to Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar, and other countries to investigate and present the processes and outcomes involved in producing sugar, silk garments, and gold locally. Through this work, he examines the modern history of Asia and explores how the world is interconnected.

The jury commented, “The ‘Made In’ project is the result of profound contemplation that demonstrates the artist’s capabilities, while also revealing strong potential for future development,” adding, “Lee Wan is an artist with great promise whose social consciousness regarding Asian modernization stands out.”

Lee Wan stated, “Through the ‘Made In’ series, I was able to reflect on the hidden aspects and histories of Asia’s economy, culture, and society,” adding, “I hope to become an artist who provides inspiration toward achieving balance in the world.”

Lee Wan plans to complete the ‘Made In’ project by next year after traveling through eight countries, including China, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The award ceremony will take place on the 26th at Leeum Museum of Art, while an exhibition commemorating the award-winning artist is scheduled to be held at PLATEAU in 2016. The prize includes 30 million won in award money.

Since 2001, during its former Ho-Am Gallery period, Leeum has organized the biennial 《ARTSPECTRUM》 exhibition to discover emerging Korean artists with the potential to grow onto the international stage.

This year, external critics and curators also participated in the artist selection process. In particular, the museum newly established the ‘ARTSPECTRUM Award’, which selects one artist from among the participating artists through a separate review process.
