The winners of the recently held 16th Gwangju Shinsegae Art Festival have been announced, with Jin Hoon receiving the Grand Prize, Yongseok Oh the Excellence Award, and Noh Yeo-woon the Emerging Artist Award.
Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery accepted submissions through the Shinsegae Art Festival website from August 18 to September 1 (a total of 105 entries), conducted an online review of the submitted materials, selected the first round of artists, and finalized the award recipients.
The nine artists selected in the first round were Nam Soo Kim, Kim Donghee, Kim Junmyoung, Noh Yeo-woon, Yongseok Oh, Lee Seola, Sujin Lee, Juhee Chung, and Jin Hoon. The representative works of the nine artists selected through the document review have been on view at Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery from the 28th of last month to the 17th of this month.
After the exhibition opened, the jury visited the gallery on the 31st of last month, viewed the works in person, conducted individual interviews with the artists, and carried out the final evaluation. As a result, Jin Hoon (painting, 45) was awarded the Grand Prize, Yongseok Oh (painting, 41) received the Excellence Award, and Noh Yeo-woon (painting, 28) was selected for the Emerging Artist Award.
This year’s jury consisted of Hey-Kyung Ki (curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea), Yoon Dongchun (professor at Seoul National University), and Chung Hyun (researcher and art critic at the Asia Culture Institute).
Shinsegae Gallery stated that “the evaluation was conducted meticulously in stages, starting from portfolio review to artwork evaluation and interviews where the artists explained their works in person.”
Grand Prize winner Jin Hoon, originally from Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, is currently based in Seoul. He received unanimous support from all three jurors this year, earning high praise for the completeness of his work, dramatic composition, diversity of palette, and refined, sensorial arrangement that conveys an overall sense of stability. Even without knowing the content or meaning of the works, the tension felt when encountering scenes within the paintings was seen as a significant strength that art can offer in this era characterized by digital sensibilities.
Excellence Award winner Yongseok Oh, originally from Gwangju, has been actively producing work while moving between Gwangju and Seoul since completing the residency program at the Gwangju Museum of Art. He received high marks for his working methods and his attitude toward art. His painterly sensitivity, intensity, and strong visual impact were particularly noted.
Rather than focusing on subject matter or narrative, he was recognized for building his own perspective between painting as a conceptual idea and painting as a material entity, demonstrating strong potential for future development and growth.
Emerging Artist Award winner Noh Yeo-woon, a relatively recent graduate of an art college, is still a young artist, yet was highly regarded for seriously pursuing her own perspective without being bound by trends. It was also noted that if she further develops her constructivist tendencies along with her ability to evoke emotional resonance, she will be able to establish a more effective artistic identity.
This year’s winners will receive prize money of 10 million KRW for the Grand Prize, 3 million KRW for the Excellence Award, and 2 million KRW for the Emerging Artist Award, along with opportunities for solo exhibitions. Additionally, Shinsegae Gallery plans to actively provide opportunities to introduce the artists and present their works through its network, including its Seoul main branch, Busan Centum City branch, and Incheon branch.
Not only the award-winning artists but also the materials submitted by various applicants will serve as valuable resources for future exhibitions organized by Shinsegae Gallery and will be developed into an archive of regional art.
Yoo Sin-yeol, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae, stated, “We will continue to discover and support talented artists and remain committed to fostering individuals who will lead regional culture in the long term. We promise to actively contribute to the growth of regional art and fulfill our role as a partner to local culture and the art community.”
Meanwhile, the award ceremony for the three final winners will be held on the 11th at 5 PM at Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery.
