The exhibition 《THREE OF US》, opening on this occasion, is a solo invitational exhibition by Yongseok Oh, who received the Excellence Award at the 16th Gwangju Shinsegae Art Festival in 2014. Having majored in formative arts during both his undergraduate and graduate studies, the artist has continuously explored how to reconstruct images in order to convey his distinctive dreamlike and metaphorical expressions, using human instincts such as anxiety, fear, and pleasure as central motifs.

In the jury statement for the 16th Gwangju Shinsegae Art Festival, it was noted that “Yongseok Oh demonstrated his capabilities through bold compositional structures and striking contrasts of color, while his profound reflection and artistic language lend an even greater sense of mystery to his work.” The works presented in this exhibition likewise metaphorically embody emotions that may exist within our everyday surroundings through unique arrangements of color and form. By addressing the uncomfortable emotions embedded within human nature and the relationships formed with others, Yongseok Oh hopes that viewers’ memories and fantasies may be freely shared through his artistic world.

The artist’s distinctive mode of communication, accompanied by ambiguity much like the metaphors and symbols found in poetry, allows for a wide range of interpretations shaped by individual experiences and memories. Armed with diversity and expressive freedom, Yongseok Oh seeks to communicate a strong painterly presence with audiences, and we hope many will offer their interest and encouragement to this solo exhibition.
