During 2019–2020, Cheongju Art Studio presents an artist relay exhibition in which the outcomes of works created during the residency period are shown in the form of projects. The artist relay exhibition is held in the studio exhibition space as a report exhibition of works produced during the residency, and each year it is organized to present new sensibilities and capabilities that move beyond the artist’s existing tendencies and frameworks.

As the eighth relay exhibition of the 13th cohort, Kim Eunseol’s 《Thicket》 is held from February 6 to February 16, 2020, in the second-floor exhibition hall and the window gallery. The opening event takes place at 5 PM on Thursday, February 6, 2020, in the lobby of Cheongju Art Studio.

Artist’s Note

Even in broad daylight, the thicket grows so dense that sunlight and moonlight barely pass through, and the air is humid and dark. Trees of unknown origin gather thickly together. Grass, trees, and vines are all tangled into one mass. Like a person hiding their inner thoughts, the thicket conceals itself in darkness. Yet, it has no intention of hiding. Each root rises above the ground, and the trunk reveals wounds as if torn apart like a human heart.

The thicket appears to contain an ambiguity that makes it impossible to guess what is happening within it. It also carries a sense of secrecy that seems to guarantee anonymity. In order to preserve our anonymity, we voluntarily accept the loss of identity and the loneliness that follows. And yet, we do not accept it. If identity is accepted, the self becomes alienated; if it is rejected, the self may be destroyed. When rejected, “I” disperses; when accepted, “I” repeats the life of the other. The “I,” which never existed to begin with, is scattered and entangled within the thicket.
