The Busan Museum of Contemporary Art is supporting art activities for mothers in Busan whose participation in cultural activities may be limited due to pregnancy or childcare.

In celebration of Family Month in May, the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art announced that it will distribute『Coloring Book: Park Meena’s Scream Series』 for mothers with young children.

The coloring book will be provided to a total of 300 women, including pregnant women and mothers with children aged five or younger. The first round of applications began on the 17th, followed by the second on the 24th and the third beginning on the 31st. One hundred copies will be distributed during each round.

『Coloring Book』 is a contemporary art project developed in collaboration with the contemporary artist Park Meena. Since the late 1990s, Park has produced experimental paintings by collecting drawings originally created for coloring practice.

In particular, Park’s 'Scream' series depicts the face of a screaming child. The coloring book includes fourteen drawings specially selected and adapted by the artist. By filling in the blank spaces of the drawings based on their own imagination, participants can create their own works using the four shades of gray colored pencils and stickers provided.

Through this non-face-to-face educational program, the museum expects that mothers with young children will be able to experience high-quality art at home even amid the COVID-19 situation.

Park Meena explained the intention behind the project, saying, “I thought about how to connect mothers—especially those who face limitations in daily activities and find it difficult to visit museums during COVID-19—with an art activity.” A detailed explanation of the project by the artist can be found on the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art’s YouTube channel.

Any pregnant woman or mother with children under five living in Busan can apply for the coloring book through the “Courses & Education” section of the Busan Integrated Reservation System on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must submit documents verifying their eligibility to receive the book.

Seong-Youn Kim, Director of the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, said, “We will continue to develop various educational programs so that all citizens, including mothers with young children, can enjoy culture and the arts. We hope for continued interest and participation from the public.”
