Suseong Artpia, operated by the Suseong Culture Foundation, presents a solo exhibition titled 《One and All》 by artist Sejin Kwon, selected as the 2025 Special Artist. The exhibition will be held from July 16 to August 10, 2025, in Galleries 1 and 2 of Suseong Artpia.

Sejin Kwon received both his BFA and MFA in Korean Painting from Kyungpook National University and later earned his doctorate in Oriental Painting from the Graduate School of Hongik University. He has actively participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in cities including Daegu, Seoul, and Jeju.

His career includes participation in the 2023 Jeonnam International Ink Biennale, receiving the Popular Artist Award at the 2021 Danwon Art Festival, and being selected as a Young Artist of the Year in 2016. His works are held in the collections of major institutions such as Daegu Art Museum, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Pohang Museum of Steel Art.

Kwon’s practice is grounded in traditional East Asian painting materials such as ink, hanji paper, and brush, while simultaneously experimenting with a contemporary visual language. The exhibition 《One and All》 introduces a method he calls “fragment painting,” in which individual drawings on 10×10 cm pieces of hanji are combined to form a single large composition. Each fragment exists as an independent painting, yet together they create an organic narrative and visual rhythm across the surface.

The artist explains, “The scenes I capture are not moments frozen in time, but surfaces accumulated over time—spaces that continue to transform.” The spreading of ink, the layering of hanji, and the interplay between chance and control produce images that visually embody the changes of nature, the passage of time, and the accumulation of emotion. Each fragment explores the relationship between individuality and totality, part and whole: from a close distance, viewers encounter detailed textures and painterly nuances, while from afar they perceive a unified narrative.

In the new works presented in this exhibition, Kwon further experiments with allowing each fragment to maintain autonomy and diversity as a painting. Drawing inspiration from the compositional strategies of twentieth-century abstract painting, he attempts a renewed interpretation of emotion and spatial perception. By working across both digital and analog media, he also explores interactions between mediums, including transforming and printing photographic images before reinterpreting them through painting.

Beginning with the question, “Can a small fragment become a painting?”, Kwon builds surfaces in which the traces of time accumulate through repetition, layering, chance, and control. His works provide viewers with a quiet visual space where personal emotions and memories may emerge, opening possibilities for new forms of visual experience and interpretation.

Park Dong-yong, Director of Suseong Artpia, stated, “The Special Artist program supports artists who expand the creative capacity of the regional art scene and lead the direction of contemporary art. Sejin Kwon’s exhibition will present new possibilities for contemporary painting by bridging tradition and modernity, part and whole, and time and space.”

Various related programs will also be held during the exhibition period. The in-gallery art history lecture “Private Atelier” will take place on July 16 (Wed) at 19:00, the family art appreciation program “Art Digilog” will be held on July 19 (Sat) at 14:30, and “Private Tour & Gallery Night,” featuring a conversation with the artist and a small concert in the gallery, will be held on July 30 (Wed) at 19:00. The exhibition opening ceremony is scheduled for July 22 (Tue) at 17:00. Further information can be found on the Suseong Artpia website.
