“Shoo shoo shoo~ shoo shoo shoo.”

Countless “shoo” characters rush forward. Their movement seems to generate the very sound of “shoo shoo shoo.” As the upward-surging “shoo” overlaps with those chasing from below, there are moments when it transforms into the thrilling sensation of “shoot.” This is shooo-, a new work by artist Yoo Seungho (48), marking his first foray into NFT (non-fungible token) art.

Scheduled to be unveiled on the 23rd through the NFT marketplace “01etc,” his first NFT work takes the form of a video. On a blank canvas, the character “shoo” appears as if pouring down, after which the upward-rising letters and the downward-falling ones gradually find their respective places, coming to rest in a balanced composition.

Yoo Seungho is known for creating new landscapes and forms through the repetitive act of “writing” onomatopoeic and mimetic words. In his 2000 work Shoo, which is part of the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, he renders a traditional landscape painting through countless tiny characters. The artist describes his work as “something that can be both image and text.”
