Cha Yeonså’s solo exhibition 《Feed me stones》 brings into the gallery the materials from ‘Festival’ (2006–2017), the final series by her father, the late painter Cha Dong-ha. The geometric fields of color in Festival (2006–2017)—arranged in horizontal and vertical balance—reemerge through the eyes and hands of his daughter.

After her father’s sudden passing in 2021, piles of his prepared mulberry paper remained as relics. Yeonså continues the series with ‘Festival’ (2023–2024), using the remaining papers one sheet at a time. The series employs a tearing and cutting technique—paper cut-out, or perhaps “dismembering.”

This action embodies the artist’s emotional response to the abrupt loss of her father. As she cuts, she confronts images of dead bodies found in forensic textbooks—drawing, carving, and forming relationships with them. It is also a gesture akin to copying by hand—an act of embodied devotion.

Forensic textbook images depict bodies without kin—appropriated and displayed in the name of public knowledge. The artist attempts to stand on the same ground as these bodies, performing Baths, a ritual cleansing the souls of the deceased. It is not that we comfort them—but rather that we receive from their bodies.
