Frieze LIVE is the fair’s platform for live art and performance. This year, Frieze is partnering with Seoul’s Art Sonje Center to present ‘off-site 2: Eleven Episodes’ from 26 August to 26 October.

The programme spotlights the next generation of Korean talent, with a particular focus on female and genderqueer artists, including Sojin Kwak, Ru Kim, Moon Sanghoon, Jaeyun Sung, Yagwang, Hiju Yoon, Chang Younghae, Jo Hyounjin, Jimin Hah, Sol Han and Hong Jiyoung. The exhibition and events explore the body as a place where power, gender, history and trauma are inscribed and performed, and new ways of perceiving and approaching identities that resist assimilation into social norms.

Part of Art Sonje Center’s ongoing site-specific projects, the exhibition of 11 artists will be open to the public across two spaces: KUKJE GALLERY K2 and (TOGETHER)(TOGETHER).

In addition, there will be special LIVE performances throughout Frieze Week and across the city: at Frieze Seoul in COEX, KUKJE GALLERY K2, (TOGETHER)(TOGETHER) and Dosan Park.

About the Projects

Ru Kim, a fist is a fist is a fist: Ignition
Performance 5pm, 5 September at KUKJE GALLERY K2

Ru Kim’s series of works ‘a fist is a fist is a fist’ unfolds through performances and exhibitions. The fist serves as a potent symbol, charged with layered social meanings. Its nature shifts depending on the shape of the clenched hand and the context of its encounter. ‘Ignition’ typically denotes the moment at which fire begins, but it can also signify the blooming of a plant or the cultural flourishing of a particular time. The performance hints at the act of releasing a clenched fist before forming a new fist once again, embracing intentional divergence.

Ru Kim (b.1995) uses performance and video installations to question the role of art in resisting and reappropriating perpetuations of violence which have been generated by patriarchal, imperial and colonial ideologies of domination. Their recent solo exhibitions include ‘I KNOW WHAT I’VE DONE’ (TINC, former Myeongseong Church, 2024), ‘a fist is a fist is a fist’ (Boan 1942, CHOI&CHOI Gallery, Space 413, 2023). Kim has also taken part in group exhibitions at Millennium Film Archive (2024), Visaural (2023), WESS (2023), Coimbra Biennial of Contemporary Art (2022) and Centre Rhénan d’Art Contemporain (2021).
