Since its inception in 2006, “Faces of Seongnam” has become Seongnam Cube Art Museum’s representative exhibition, marking its 16th iteration in 2025. Dedicated to expanding the city’s cultural and artistic base, the exhibition highlights artists connected to the region, creating an environment for artistic practice and offering opportunities for civic cultural engagement.

The 2025 edition, 《Harmless Stories》, emphasizes works that transmit the artists’ visual languages in ways that are harmless yet impactful. Here, “harmless” does not mean a passive absence of harm, but rather the possibility of art to stimulate thought without causing injury, fostering understanding and empathy.

In today’s increasingly tense and competitive society, individuals are unconsciously subjected to constant states of stress. Against this backdrop, the concept of “harmlessness” (무해력) has emerged as a timely notion, even highlighted in Trend Korea 2025. What people may need is not sharp critique, but gentle comprehension and empathy. This notion transcends passivity, instead proposing a relational mode of understanding and positive influence. In this sense, art becomes another form of language.

Art inherently stimulates human perception and thought, sometimes bearing provocative messages. Yet its impact need not be destructive or radical. 《Harmless Stories》 focuses on works that contain personal narratives, sensory experiences, or social commentary, while offering opportunities for positive engagement and empathy.

This year’s edition especially features young artists with ties to Seongnam, who experiment with diverse media and methods to explore how art can communicate with society and how individual stories can resonate as shared empathy. Their “harmless stories” become practical attempts to play a positive role within relational contexts.
