Im Sunny's work begins with the question of what the essence of painting is, and then delves into the perpetual shackles of flatness. Its roots lie not in art, which prioritized representation over the question of the reality of a subject, attempting to capture a three-dimensional illusion within a two-dimensional canvas. Rather, it stems from the pursuit of abstract art, which began as an effort to eliminate this illusion—in other words, the pursuit of the essence of flat painting.

Rather than attempting to convey the content within a painted image, IM SUNNY's work focuses on visual formative elements like color, line, and composition, as well as essential elements of painting, such as change, balance, and unity.
