The residency artists Cha Hyeonwook and Shin Seungjae are holding their exhibition at the Cheongju Art Studio through March 22.

Cha Hyeonwook presents his residency showcase under the theme of “Works from Reminiscence.” Using brush, ink, and paper, his works fill the canvas with landscapes etched into memory upon returning from his travels. These landscapes capture the mountains and rivers of nature through the nuanced gradations of ink.

Cha’s landscape paintings deviate from conventional approaches, combining two-dimensional paintings and three-dimensional installations to expand the exhibition space. The flat surface transitions into volume, and the volume creates a spatial experience of seeing and being seen.

Art critic Kang Seonhak remarked, “Rather than prematurely ascribing complete meaning or system to Cha Hyeonwook’s work, it is more important to observe the possibilities of movement it reveals,” and added, “His sensibility paradoxically composes traditional space, revealing the act of dismantling as a distinct characteristic of his approach.”

Cha Hyeonwook previously held a solo exhibition at Beomeo Art Street in 2013 and has participated in group exhibitions in Busan, Daegu, and Cheongju. In 2015, he is working as a resident artist at the Cheongju Creative Art Studio.

Artist Shin Seungjae presents works under the theme “The Long, Empty Reservoir.” His paintings, drawings, photographs, and film-based works capture vivid experiences and reveal transformations in perception and sensation. Shin Seungjae previously held solo exhibitions at Gallery Lamer (2006–2007), Shinhan Gallery (2013), and at Gachang Studio and Alternative Space SSAC (2014).
