The
exhibition 《Temporary Landing》 at TINC juxtaposes the distinctive characteristics of an
aircraft—both on the ground and in the air—onto sculpture and flat works,
connecting the two media with the aircraft’s unique spatial properties. By
capturing the common methodologies of the three participating artists, the
exhibition creates a temporary pause, a suspended moment to rearrange the
timeline of their artistic practices.
The
word "landing" in the exhibition title holds a dual meaning: it
refers both to the act of an aircraft touching down and to the flat platform
between two flights of stairs. This dual meaning alludes to how the stair
landings within TINC can themselves become a form of “landing,” supporting the
concept of touch down.
The
three participating artists—Kai Oh, Jang Jinseung, and Heo Suyeon—move between
sculpture and flat media much like an aircraft that navigates between air and
ground. Though their approaches to sculpture and flat works differ slightly,
their collective display forms a formation flight of diverse aircraft,
symbolizing an aerial missile that can break through artistic dilemmas and
extra fuel to fortify the inertia of their creative processes. The exhibition
space temporarily becomes a landing strip where their works can touch down and
stabilize.
In this exhibition, Kai Oh presents five new works that juxtapose images of the
"inside of the mouth" and the "underground." The mouth,
toothbrushes, soil, and roots depicted in the images are portrayed in a
slightly skewed manner, disrupting their usual state of interaction. In one
piece, multiple toothbrushes are placed inside a single mouth, while in
another, roots that typically remain underground are exposed, emphasizing
opposing forces. Through this deliberate distortion, Oh destabilizes the safe,
sensitive conditions of these two highly selective entities.
The
five artworks, displayed at a distance from each other, are linked to different
types of fixed structures, each highlighting the tension of gravity with
varying weights. This spatial arrangement emphasizes the diverse gravitational
interactions present in her work, conveying a sense of both balance and
instability.
