"The artist first references the form of an object, then invites viewers to consider the form, rhythm, and volume of the sculpture itself. The process becomes a struggle with the material… ultimately a tug-of-war between ‘appearing as wood’ and ‘not appearing as wood.’"—From the exhibition text by Kim Hannara

DrawingRoom presented the solo exhibition 《Room with Flowers》 by Rhee Donghoon as the first show in its emerging artist series, a year-long project highlighting new talents.

In this exhibition, Rhee sculpted flowerpots from direct observation and then used those wooden sculptures as source material for his paintings. The resulting sculptures and paintings face each other like mirrored images—similar, yet subtly different.

Rather than prioritizing technical virtuosity, Rhee allows the innate qualities of the wood to guide the sculpting of flowers and leaves. These forms are then abstracted once again through the artist’s hand as they reappear in two-dimensional form, tracing a second cycle of interpretation and transformation.
