Park Chan-kyong (age 39), an artist and the younger brother of film director Park Chan-wook, has won the 2004 Hermes Korea Art Award for his work Power Passage, it was announced on the 22nd.

Hermès Korea and Art Sonje Center, co-organizers of the Hermes Art Award, selected Park as the winner among three finalists, which included Flying City, a collective addressing urban environmental issues, and artist Jeong Yeon-doo, known for photographing scenes from contemporary urban life. The decision was made by a panel of five domestic and international art experts. Notably, Park is the younger brother of director Park Chan-wook, who received the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for Oldboy.

Park’s winning work, Power Passage (2004), is a 15-minute photo-video piece that combines film footage and archival materials to examine the space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, as well as the issue of Korea’s division.

Sponsored by the Korean branch of the French fashion brand Hermès, the Hermes Art Award is presented to a Korean artist under the age of 45. The winner receives a 20 million KRW cash prize, and all three finalists participate in a group exhibition. The exhibition featuring new works by Park and the two other finalists is on view at Art Sonje Center in Seoul through December 5.
