Kukje Gallery is pleased to present Kira Kim’s solo exhibition,《Super Mega Factory》.

Over the past ten years, Kim has distinguished himself among young contemporary artists in Korea by presenting works that investigate and critique various aspects of capitalist society, using a diversity of mediums including photography, installation, painting, and sculpture. Super Mega Factory presents a more spectacular and encompassing view of his recent work, an expansion of the Capitalist Society as a Palace of Mirage project that Kim initiated in 2008.

From the beginning of his career, Kira Kim has consistently shown his interest in contemporary society, challenging the conspiracy of power. Kim asserts that our outwardly spectacular and perfect society is imbued with hidden conspiracies in order to maintain a consumer-driven culture and power structure. In depicting various layers in hierarchical relationship of power, Kim presents his own constructed miniature of a capitalist society. He spotlights heroic images that are formed by mass media such as Superman and Batman, in addition to powerful social figures like Hitler, in order to reveal falsified process of characterization, image making and underlying conspiracies.

Kira Kim utilizes familiar methods of appropriation and parody to portray propaganda messages of capitalism while maintaining a critical attitude in addressing these issues. Kim refers to various figures and events in history, society and art in his work, brilliantly altering them beyond their pre-existing contexts and identities. He confronts this not-so-beautiful reality humorously. Unexpected representations of monstrous Superman or Queen Elizabeth II with a bruised eye invite the viewer to consider a fresh and amusing perspective on our preconceived ideas. In this exhibition, Kim presents not only a sharp critique of contemporary society, but he also shows his boundless passion of the world by drawing extensively from historical and artistic references.

Kira Kim was born in 1974. He graduated from Kyungwon University with a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and obtained his Master’s Degree in Environmental Sculpture. He also attended Goldsmith’s College in London, U.K. Since 1999, he has held nine solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. He has exhibited internationally, including Switzerland, U.K., U.S.A., and Japan. Kira Kim’s works are collected by Art Sonje Center, Arko Art Center, and Kyungwon University in South Korea, as well as King’s Lynn Art Center in U.K., Fukuoka Museum and Mori Art Museum in Japan.
