From September 14 through November 30, the Coreana Museum of Art will present Step x Step, an exhibition by Bruce Nauman, Suki Seokyeong Kang, Tsai Ming-liang, Pauline Boudry/ Renate Lorenz, Klara Lidén, Jehyun Shin, and Every Ocean Hughes.
This is an international exhibition organized to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Coreana Museum of Art. As the title suggests, the exhibition is composed of works about “step,” and all 15 works on display center on the everyday act of walking. The exhibition’s interest in “step” is an extension of the museum’s exhibition programs, which have consistently dealt with discourses surrounding the ‘body’.
The first exhibition space presents video works by Bruce Nauman, Tsai Ming-liang, Every Ocean Hughes, and Klara Lidén that focus exclusively on the act of walking. Each of these artists reimagines the movement of walking by performing exaggerated walks (Bruce Nauman), extremely slow walks (Tsai Ming-liang), walks horizontally with the ground (Every Ocean Hughes) and moonwalks (Klara Lidén). In the second exhibition space, more dynamic movements based on walking emerge. Jehyun Shin focuses on performers who are given the same instructions but add their own interpretations to create unidentical movements, while Pauline Boudry/ Renate Lorenz begins their performance with the Kurdish movement of walking with their shoes the wrong way round to deceive their pursuers. Suki Seokyeong Kang presents a textile work based on the structure of Jeongganbo, a traditional Korean musical score that capture the pitch, rhythm, and even the movement of the body.
