Leeum Museum of Art will hold “There Exists
Another Evolution, But In This One” by Anicka Yi, marking her first and most
comprehensive museum presentation in Asia, from September 5 to December 29 at
its M2 space. Anicka Yi is an internationally recognized Korean-American artist
whose experimental work connects technology, biology, and the senses.
Anicka Yi is known for her use of organic
and ephemeral materials such as bacteria, scents, and tempura-fried flowers to
delicately capture the nuances of human emotion and sensation. Building on her
sensory explorations, Yi’s practice also investigates the boundaries of
intelligence, challenging anthropocentric perspectives by centering the
experiences and insights of non-human entities like machines, fungi, and
seaweed.
The exhibition title draws inspiration from
the enigmatic nature of Zen Buddhist koans, reflecting a meditative and
spiritual shift in Yi’s recent work. The exhibition, featuring over 30 works
created over the past decade, is set to offer a comprehensive introduction to
Yi’s distinctive artistic universe and recent her artworks.
Anicka Yi (b. 1971) was born in Seoul and
is currently based in New York. The artist develops conceptual art through
various fields such as fragrance, gastronomy, and science, and is particularly
known for her olfactory installations and collaborations with biologists and
chemists.
Although she began her artistic career
relatively late, holding her first solo exhibition at the age of 40, she
received the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize, one of the world's two major art
awards, just five years after her debut in 2016. In 2021, she also held a solo
exhibition at the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in London. During the 2024
Frieze Seoul fair, Frieze has highlighted her solo exhibition "There
Exists Another Evolution, But In This One" at the Leeum Museum of Art as
one of the must-see exhibitions.
