Mi-jung SHIN’s exhibition 《City × Island × Archive》 at SeMA Bunker brings together video and archival installations centered on memories of places that disappeared through Seoul’s urban development in the twentieth century.

The exhibition is based on materials SHIN collected over approximately two years while communicating with former residents of Bamseom and tracing memories of the island that vanished in the course of Seoul’s urban development.

The video work Yul-do(栗島), titled after the former name of Bamseom, reawakens the placeness of the island through images of its forgotten landscape and through the memories and traces of the life of Il-yong Lee (b. 1936), a displaced former resident of Bamseom. By presenting the private materials of residents who lost their hometown in the public space of the exhibition, the work reframes personal memory as historical material and reconstructs it through aesthetic images.

SeMA Bunker was created from a former secret underground bunker in Yeouido, believed to have been built during the military regime of the 1970s, and was transformed into an exhibition space of the Seoul Museum of Art in 2017. Within this facility, which itself symbolizes the turbulent history of modern and contemporary Korea, SHIN restores as landscape images the memories of Bamseom, which was blasted away and disappeared in the course of Yeouido’s development.

Through the exhibition, SeMA Bunker is envisioned not merely as a platform for displaying artworks, but as a site of coexistence where communal memory encounters the images that contain it.
