Gallery Kabinett's April exhibition captures moments that artist Yoon Mi-seon encountered in the surreal unconscious space of a "circus" stage within her dreams. The title of this solo exhibition, 《SOMNICUS》, is a creative compound of the Latin words 'somni' (sleep) and 'circus,' forming more than a simple linguistic experiment—it embodies the core metaphor that runs through her new series of works.

Sleep is a non-physical space where consciousness and unconsciousness intermingle, where accumulated images freely traverse boundaries. The circus, on the other hand, is a special place that brings these dream visions into the physical world; the artist visualizes this stage of "life" through the black clown. At the intersection of these two worlds, Yoon Mi-seon explores the fundamental questions of human experience—the precarious balance between vulnerability and equilibrium—through her artistic language.

One day in her dream, the artist witnessed a special being segmented into geometric forms of cylinders, cones, and spheres. This fragmented body and face, named "Bob-hair" by the artist, serves as both her alter ego and muse, performing a dance on the circus stage. The image of Bob-hair struggling not to fall in this special space of fantasy and tension—the circus—left a powerful impression on the artist.

The works born from this experience reveal wit, lightness, elegance, and mystery on the surface, but beneath lies a deep existential anguish. The dream-state clown, who paradoxically experiences solitude and anxiety amidst endless audience demands and expectations, merges with the artist's mirror-self—the graphite face—expressed through the detailed visual language of her linework.

Yoon Mi-seon's paintings are built upon the strong contrast of light and shadow created by precise pencil lines. For the artist, black is not simply a color but a complete color in itself—a fundamental backdrop containing infinite possibilities. She creates the illusion of three dimensions through subtle variations in brightness, while intentionally treating certain areas with low brightness or limited color to achieve a paradoxical harmony between depth and flatness.

The recurring "ball" in her works functions as a core motif in Yoon Mi-seon's art. This perfect circular form, with its symmetry and completeness, serves as a visual balancing point within complex compositions while simultaneously operating as a symbolic device that projects the artist's inner world. Sometimes it appears as a physical prop rolling under the clown's feet, sometimes as a juggling tool thrown and controlled at fingertips, and sometimes it is personified, emerging as an independent entity.

Additionally, she captures the moment when the cluster of personas—countless masks of the self wandering in existential emptiness—encounters the "ball," the archetypal form of completeness. This meeting symbolizes the journey of the fragmented self toward wholeness and visualizes the sublime attitude of imperfect humans resolving to achieve completeness.

This solo exhibition at Gallery Kabinett marks the starting point of the artist's new series and represents the deepened fruition of themes she has consistently explored. Through this exhibition, visitors will witness moments of anguish captured by the artist amid the paradoxical coexistence of human vulnerability and transcendence. We invite you to fully experience the gestures of human existence embodied in Yoon Mi-seon's black clowns—beings who fall yet possess the will toward growth—as they perform their precarious balancing act.
