From May 2 to 31, the Gwanak Cultural Foundation (CEO Cha Mintae) presents 《Decoding the Phenomenon》 at Gwanak Art Hall, a solo exhibition by Youngkak Cho, an artist who has actively presented digital works in Korea and abroad.

Youngkak Cho is a new-media artist with eleven years of experience who interprets contemporary systems through his distinctive perspective, employing cutting-edge digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and blockchain.

In January, he participated as the main artist in the AI art exhibition 《Touch The Real – Galaxy Book: The Art of AI Creations》, held at News Museum Euljiro in Jung-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, and Intel Korea, presenting an encounter between technology, artificial intelligence, and art.

《Decoding the Phenomenon》 is Youngkak Cho’s fourth solo exhibition. Based on his own ‘artistic language,’ the exhibition combines technology and art to decode and reinterpret contemporary phenomena. The exhibition consists of Transitive Sentences of Phenomenal Reason, Full-time Employee, Dialogue Box, and Close-up Reports 2: Green Influencers.

Each work employs advanced technologies to address stories of contemporary life as perceived by the artist. Drawing on Cho’s expansive artistic worldview, the exhibition reinterprets everyday phenomena through art, offering viewers multiple perspectives and insights into the world while stimulating their artistic sensibilities.

As a special accompanying program, a free ‘Decoding the Phenomenon’ workshop with Youngkak Cho will be held on May 11 at the foundation’s Children’s Lounge for ten children aged eight and older. Under the theme “Creating with Artificial Intelligence: My World,” participants will experiment with various creative techniques using generative AI and create media artworks incorporating their own stories. Each session will run for 90 minutes, with three sessions scheduled at 10:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.

Cha Mintae, CEO of the Gwanak Cultural Foundation, stated, “We have organized this special exhibition to offer the residents of Gwanak-gu new forms of emotion and imagination through digital art, a genre that may still feel unfamiliar to many.” He added, “We will continue to present curated exhibitions across a wide range of genres, expanding opportunities for Gwanak residents to encounter art and supporting access to diverse works.”
