On December 3, 2024, South Korea was thrown into profound turmoil following former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law. On April 4, 2025, the Constitutional Court removed Yoon from office.

《Beyond: the People》 (subtitle: K-Democracy), an exhibition that documents these 123 days through the perspectives of artists, seeks to collectively reflect on and record the people’s resistance and the process of restoring democracy after overcoming a period of insurrection, while reaffirming the constitutional principle that “all sovereignty resides in the people, and all state authority emanates from the people.”

The exhibition was conceived to remember the scenes of K-Democracy that democratic citizens collectively defended despite the threat of martial law, with approximately thirty artists from Korea and abroad interpreting these events from diverse perspectives.

From citizens who stood before armored vehicles and armed troops, to farmers who crossed Namtaeryeong Pass through a snowstorm, and even those who, though unable to join the demonstrations in person, willingly prepaid meals and drinks for participants—all were protagonists in the defense of democracy.

The exhibition also offers a range of participatory programs designed to allow younger generations to experience and learn the value of democracy. Activities include coloring a large-scale banner painting measuring 12.3 meters in length, as well as the “A Real Republic of Korea, Let Me Have My Say!” corner, which will serve as a space where citizens can take the first steps together toward building a new country.

A screening of the documentary film First Lady, produced by Voice of Seoul, will be accompanied by a guest visit (GV) session with the audience. Visitors will also be able to encounter the 123 days in the public square, as documented by various media outlets, through photography and media art.

Every weekend during the exhibition period, a variety of busking performances will take place at the Grand Maru of Maru Art Center in Insa-dong. On weekday evenings, Cho Yoon-bum’s Quartet X, known for its appearances on Month-End Kim Eo-jun and Have a Taste of Opera, will perform and introduce classical masterpieces resonating with the emotions of the times, offering profound comfort and inspiration to citizens who were wounded during a period of turmoil.

The exhibition is co-hosted by K-Unit Co., Ltd. and the Seoul Federation of Korean National Art, with support from the Korean Federation of National Art, Voice of Seoul, KIP Co., Ltd., and Scholas Co., Ltd. Ko Kyung-il, Chairman of the Seoul Federation of Korean National Art and a professor at Sangmyung University, stated, “I hope this exhibition and its programs will become a festival of K-Democracy in which citizens can share a sense of empathy, and we are also planning a nationwide touring exhibition.”

He added, “I also hope that solidarity among artists and citizens calling for an end to the forces behind the insurrection and demanding strict accountability will continue even after the presidential election.”
