As part of the 2025 Youngeun Artist Project, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art presents 《Engraving the Stars》, a solo exhibition by Starya Hee-seung Sung, a 13th-term resident artist at Youngeun Artist in Residency, from Saturday, July 12 to Sunday, August 17, 2025, in Gallery 2 of the museum.

Known as the “star artist,” Sung has conveyed messages of comfort and healing through the universally familiar motif of the star. In this exhibition, she presents a visual language of solidarity that connects “I,” “you,” and “we” through structures in which points, lines, and triangles form successive layers and expand outward.

For the artist, the star is not merely an image, but a symbol that links emotions and connects hearts, as well as a medium through which she communicates with viewers.

Beginning with figurative representations of stars in her early work, Sung’s practice has gradually evolved as the points and lines composing the stars are dismantled and recombined into triangles, expanding across the surface like streams of starlight.

Unfolding without a fixed center or boundary, the pictorial field is completed through repeated brushstrokes akin to a meditative practice and encompasses multilayered relationships such as the Trinity, nature and humanity, and the individual and the community.

The exhibition title 《Engraving the Stars》 refers not to the act of “drawing” stars, but to the act of “connecting and engraving” stars within one another’s hearts. The artist states, “We are all connected to one another like stars in the night sky. I am grateful that, even while walking different paths, we can still laugh and cry together, and I hope to offer this exhibition as a small gift to all of us in our most ordinary selves.”

The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the light of hope that continues to shimmer even within the darkness of everyday life, as well as on the traces of warmth we leave in one another’s hearts. Through the artist’s gesture of connecting star to star, the hearts of viewers are linked one by one, gradually forming an invisible constellation of solidarity.

"Just as the stars are strung together across the night sky, so too are you and I — connected as one, living this life together. Each of our lives shares quiet echoes of similarity, even in their differences. So with gratitude for the things that let us cry, laugh, and rejoice together, we offer a small gift to the most ordinary version of ourselves — here, in this very moment." (From the Artist Notes)
