Kim Donghee primarily creates works in Seoul that respond to the architectural structures of exhibition spaces, non-exhibition spaces, and commercial venues, intervening in how visitors perceive and experience space. The physical ‘spaces’ produced by Kim may function as clearly designated areas such as lounges, exits, or offices within residential, office, and commercial facilities that actively accommodate human use.

In settings such as exhibition venues, production sites, studios, and factories, where the placement of objects may take priority over human occupation, they may instead be structured according to artistic, photographic, or economic contexts as their primary layers. In this way, Kim produces and installs both tangible and intangible structures that embody the numerous contexts imposed upon a space as layers, then leaves the resulting spatial composition open.

《Hall 2》 ultimately asks what it means for people to experience and use a space, and then to encounter that experience again. This may appear similar to inducing an architectural experience, but the exhibition is concerned more broadly with enabling viewers to reconsider space within art—at times critically, at other times simply by allowing them to spend an enjoyable and comfortable period within it.

A single space contains endless possibilities for human experience, and depending on how it is designed, installed, and guided, visitors may leave with entirely different impressions. Kim Donghee’s practice aims for artists, curators, and viewers to form a temporary community in which they are both together and apart, each carrying away their own experience of the space.
