Kim Donghee’s (b. 1986) solo exhibition 《A House, Arrived Again》 is held at the House of Woonkyung from September 2 to October 31, 2026. Kim has continued to develop works that intervene in viewers’ movement and lines of sight by transforming the conditions and structures that constitute space.

Following his early works, in which he turned overlooked urban spaces into temporary platforms for exhibitions and performances, his interest gradually shifted toward addressing the structure of space itself. More recently, he has revisited the drawings, structures, and spatial traces of his previous works in new locations, exploring how forms establish relationships across different places and times and how those relationships alter the experience of space.

The House of Woonkyung, where the exhibition takes place, was built in the 1930s and is known to occupy the former site of Dojeonggung Palace from the Joseon period. From 1953, it served as the residence of politician Woonkyung Lee Jae-hyung (1914-1992), and since 1993 it has been preserved as a historical site carrying memories of Korea’s modern and contemporary history while gradually transforming into a venue for contemporary art.

The layers of time accumulated within the House of Woonkyung intersect with Kim Donghee’s long-standing questions about space. In this exhibition, the artist presents new works while also bringing previous works back into the new context of the House of Woonkyung. By altering circulation routes, revealing the structure and elevation of the terrain, reversing parts of the house’s physical form, and repositioning earlier works, he connects coordinates from different times and spaces.

White Staircase 1, 2(2026), extending from the courtyard of the main quarters through the daecheong wooden hall and into the rear garden, connects interior and exterior spaces into a single path and allows viewers to experience the structure of the traditional house through their bodies.

Excavation for a Six-Part Circle
(2026), in which a fan-shaped section of the front yard is dug out, positions viewers below the existing ground level and reveals how terrain organizes spatial perception by changing the viewpoint toward the main quarters. Black Line(2026) and White Line(2026), connecting the main quarters and the sarangchae, encourage the house’s inside and outside to be perceived as parts of a single structure.

Inverted Attic(2026), installed in the large courtyard, is based on the actual dimensions and form of an attic originally located inside the sarangchae and is transformed into a structure from which the exterior of the house can be viewed. Within it is installed a reconstructed version of a soundscape previously presented at the House of Woonkyung by recording artist Kim Youngsun, bringing sounds from the past back into the present.

Old maps of Seochon and topographic maps of the land on which the House of Woonkyung stands are layered across the windows of the main quarters and the floor of the adjacent room, overlapping with the present-day landscape and creating scenes in which multiple temporal layers coexist.

Contemporary dancer Ahn Eun-me explores the House of Woonkyung in the opening performance Gurumi Gurumi, using a camera attached to the tip of a brush. The moving camera’s gaze presents the architecture of the house from an unfamiliar perspective.

After passing through an experience in which multiple times and spaces overlap in 《A House, Arrived Again》, the house encountered once more is perceived differently from before. When one’s position and viewpoint change, a familiar place becomes unfamiliar, and the present itself is newly experienced. For Kim Donghee, space is a field in which relationships are continually formed.
