Artist LEE Jihyun, born in 1978, is an emerging artist who graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Sungshin Women’s University and its graduate school. She gained recognition for her work through exhibitions at Gallery Artinus, Art Space Hue, and 《175 Young Artists》 at Ilmin Museum of Art.

This exhibition at doART Gallery presents large-scale works measuring over 150 ho, along with drawings. In particular, moving away from her earlier style in which multiple canvases incorporating actual space were assembled into a single scene, she also presents works in which empty spaces and spatial elements are combined with digital imagery within a single canvas.

LEE Jihyun combines images of her studio, a living room with a sofa, and views seen through a window with entirely different spaces, transferring these composite scenes onto canvas before packing them up and venturing “out.” Originating from this excursion of the self as transposed into space, the multiple spaces composited and settled onto a flat surface become yet another space of her own.

In doing so, the artist invites viewers to experience a sense of estrangement and awkwardness, as well as the pleasure of peering into someone else’s private life through unexpected encounters between disparate spaces.

For LEE Jihyun, however, “going out” does not simply mean moving from an enclosed space into an open one; rather, it means creating a gap between two spaces and establishing a structure through which they can communicate with each other at any time.

The destination of this movement is a public space frequented by many people. Her paintings therefore make their way toward galleries and museums. At these final destinations, the artist unpacks her belongings and recreates her private space as it is.
