Since leaving the Byeokje area of Goyang and moving in 2017 to a housing development district in Bongdam, Hwaseong, Ji Eun Kim has been researching life there from the perspective of “Korean-style suburbia” (Suburbia: a car-centered way of life characteristic of American suburban areas).

The commodification and standardization of space brought about by the logic of efficiency and capital raise existential questions about lives that have lost a traditional sense of place and are unable to take root anywhere. In this exhibition, under the theme of “Institutionalized Floor Plan,” Kim seeks to examine from multiple perspectives life within new towns (housing development districts) and apartment complexes, where a sense of place has been erased and space is organized according to function.

She explores a way of life that is disconnected from and unable to form relationships with external space, instead focusing inward, through model houses and IKEA showrooms that virtually realize prospective buyers’ desires for the home.

Through painting, drawing, and photographic collage, she seeks to render everyday life within institutionalized spaces—represented through land-use plans, site plans, and floor plans—as both unfamiliar and familiar.
