The Venice Biennale Foundation (President: Paolo Baratta) announced on March 5th the list of invited artists for the main exhibition of the 56th Venice Biennale (Artistic Director: Okwui Enwezor). A total of 136 artists from 53 countries will participate, including three Korean artists: Ayoung Kim (born 1979, female), Hwayeon Nam (born 1979, female), and Heungsoon Lim (born 1969, male).

The main exhibition of the 56th Venice Biennale, curated by Nigerian-born Artistic Director Okwui Enwezor, will be held under the theme 《All the World’s Futures》. In the history of the Venice Biennale main exhibition, Korean artists such as Do Ho Suh (2001), Kim Sora, Kim Hongseok, Jang Younghae, and Joo Jaehwan (2003), as well as Koo Jeong A and Haegue Yang (2009) have participated. This marks the first time in six years that three Korean artists have been invited to the Venice Biennale main exhibition.

Ayoung Kim studied visual design, photography, and fine arts in Korea and the UK, working across video, sound, image, text, and narrative structures. Her work explores the intersection of world history and modern Korean history, utilizing sound, text, and images as layered sensory media. Her works have been exhibited at Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, Germany), Royal Academy of Arts (London, UK), and Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea). In 2011, she was dispatched to Künstlerhaus Bethanien with the support of the Arts Council Korea.

She was also selected as a Young Art Frontier (AYAF) by the Arts Council Korea in 2009. Notably, she received the British Institution Award (Royal Academy of Arts, UK) in 2010 and was a finalist for the Future Map Prize (176/Zabludowicz Collection & University of the Arts London, UK).

Her work was also recognized in the Flash Forward-Emerging Photographers (Magenta Foundation, Canada) and with the Excellence Award at the 2008 JoongAng Fine Arts Prize. At this year’s Venice Biennale main exhibition, she will present an installation and performance titled Jepeute, I Offer the Whale Oil of the Hanging Garden, Shell 3 (working title), in collaboration with composer Heera Kim.

Hwayeon Nam is a media artist living and working in Berlin and Seoul. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including 《Move: on the spot》(2012, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea) and 《Spaces for Drawing》(2013, HITE Collection). In 2009, she was awarded the Hermes Foundation Art Award. For the Venice Biennale main exhibition, she will present a video work under the theme of The Botany of Desire, based on her research on 17th-century Dutch Tulipomania. Additionally, she will hold a solo exhibition at Arko Art Center starting April 10.

Heungsoon Lim is an active filmmaker and media artist. His works have been showcased in various exhibitions, including 《Sharjah Biennial》(2015), 《Future is Now》(2014, MAXXI, Rome, Italy), 《Year of the Plague Journal》(2014, Arko Art Center, Seoul), and 《Animism》(2013, Ilmin Museum of Art, Seoul). In 2014, he received the ‘Artist of Tomorrow Award’ from the Sungkok Art Museum and the ‘Best Rough Cut Award’ from the Incheon Documentary Report. At the main exhibition, Lim will present the video work Factory Complex, filmed in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

In August 2014, the Arts Council Korea invited Okwui Enwezor, the Artistic Director of the 56th Venice Biennale, as part of its international exchange program hosted by Arko Art Center and the International Exchange Department. During his visit, Enwezor conducted studio visits and research on Korean artists and delivered a lecture titled 《Migrants, Nomads, Pilgrims: The Globalization of Contemporary Art》, examining contemporary art trends within an international context.

Arts Council Korea Chairman Kwon Youngbin expressed his anticipation, stating that the participation of three Korean artists in the Venice Biennale main exhibition, in addition to the exhibition at the Korean Pavilion (Commissioner: Sook-Kyung Lee, Artists: Junho Jeon and Munkyung Won), provides an opportunity to showcase the diversity and dynamism of contemporary Korean art on a global stage.

Meanwhile, 《The 14th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition: Crow’s Eye View》, which won the Golden Lion for the first time in the history of the Korean Pavilion at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014, will be presented at the Arko Art Center from March 12 to May 10, 2015.
