Art Space Seetang Raum presents Shinae Kim’s solo exhibition 《Slicing Space》 from June 1 to June 26. As the artist’s ninth solo exhibition and Seetang Raum’s second curated exhibition of 2022, this solo presentation expresses, in the artist’s own way, the planar qualities of space that she has discussed through her previous solo exhibitions and other projects.

Kim’s new work begins from the way our experiences shifted from space to the plane during the pandemic. As experiences that once took place in space were replaced by experiences on flat screens, the artist asks herself what the planarity of space might be.

The artist focused on momentariness and surface among the planar qualities of space. For momentariness, she concentrated on the visual experience of slicing space into layers, expressing the structure that composes the space of Seetang Raum as works resembling a planar grid.

For the surface of space, she led viewers to look again at space through tactile yet thoroughly visual elements: the bumpy and rough walls that communicate a sense of texture without being touched, the cracked cement of the floor, the shine of tiles, and the glossy varnish on wood.

On the first floor, the artist observed various textural layers and separated the grids created by tile and cement into vertical and horizontal lines through drawing, thereby dividing the two textures into two layers of lines. In the third exhibition room on the second floor, the five horizontal lines that visually compose the wall of the first floor were transformed into paper drawings.

Through the movement of the viewer’s gaze, these intersect with the vertical lines of the second-floor exhibition room, creating grid-like moments. In the first-floor exhibition room, one part of the exhibition space made in 3D appears as a flat screen. The artist sought to express one layer of space transferred onto a screen by modeling the space as a plane and applying texture to it.

Shinae Kim, who has developed her practice while moving between the United Kingdom, Germany, and Korea, is currently active as an artist-in-residence at the MMCA Residency Changdong and is scheduled to hold a solo exhibition at SeMA Storage of the Seoul Museum of Art this coming August.

This exhibition is presented free of charge at Art Space Seetang Raum (15-1, Seosaro 5-gil, Jeju-si) through the support of the Jeju Culture and Arts Foundation’s Small Art Space Program, and is open through Sunday, June 26 by advance reservation through a Google link (vo.la/p7uUy). Further information on the exhibition can be found on Seetang Raum’s website (www.instagram.com/seetangraum).
