Installation view of 《Highlife》 © The Reference

Photographer Choi Wonjoon, who has explored themes of division, North Korea, and Africa through photography, video, and archival installations both domestically and internationally, will hold a solo exhibition, 《Highlife》, at Gallery The Reference in Tongui-dong from September 2.

Choi interprets the exhibition through the lens of Highlife, an African music genre, while also engaging with its meaning as “the lifestyle of the upper class.” The exhibition highlights the lives of Africans who came to Korea in pursuit of a better life, presenting them through the concept of Highlife. It challenges common perceptions of foreign laborers in Korea by showing African residents living joyful, fulfilling lives in the country.
