In 2019, the exhibition 《Ja-Gong-Gong》 began with the slogan “help oneself, help one another, and create a new publicness.” Centered on Mullae Art Village, it is a contemporary art project that supports artists connected to the Yeongdeungpo area in opening creative pathways, building a foundation for self-sustainability, and exploring possibilities for continued collaboration.

The 《Ja-Gong-Gong》 exhibition, which has translated themes related to region and social issues into the language of art through various plots, marks its fifth edition this year by focusing on the “individual” as the origin and subject of creation.

Regardless of region, generation, gender, or genre, the project seeks change by forming solidarity with artists who need expansion and transition in their current practices, and by searching for better directions for their work.

As part of this change, a new project titled “one-on-one matching with critics” was carried out during the exhibition preparation process. Through this project, the exhibition sought to open new creative pathways through matching workshops and art criticism in collaboration with critics Kim Seong-ho, Yoo Eun-soon, Jang Jin-taek, and Heo Ho-jeong.

As an extension of the project, seven artists selected through an open call—Kim Jung-in, Baek Ha, Woongcheol Lee, Ipkyu Jang, Cho Yu-kyung, Han Young-kwon, and Hee Bak—present around 40 contemporary artworks across various genres under the theme of “Pitching.” Originally referring to pitching in baseball or an investment presentation by a company, “pitching” here expresses the attitude of artists contemplating how to move beyond the borderline of creation and advance to the next stage.

《A Small Party Dress》 takes its title from a book by Christian Bobin (1954–2022, France), inspired by the similarity between Bobin’s reflections on the reason for reading and the attitude of writing, and the artists’ own practices.

To create a new opportunity for transformation, the exhibition space has also moved from the Yeongdeungpo Art Hall Gallery to Yeongdeungpo Art Square. Recently renovated as a specialized exhibition space, Yeongdeungpo Art Square has hosted distinctive exhibition programs such as open concerts and reading performances.

Through its first contemporary art project, 《A Small Party Dress》, it aims to establish itself as an art space frequented and enjoyed by citizens.

The exhibition will be open from Monday the 13th to Sunday the 26th, with free admission for all visitors.
