The resident artists’ introductory exhibition 《The Future Opened by X and Y》 is a group exhibition presenting the artists newly joining Cheongju Art Studio. Now welcoming its 16th cohort of resident artists, Cheongju Art Studio has hosted 301 artists from Korea and abroad and has continued to support artists who have pursued creative and distinctive practices across art scenes both within and beyond the region.

This year’s resident artists are Kang Kun, Kim Byungchan, Kim Sulki, Yoonah Kim, Kim Hyunseok, Park Seoyeon, Bang Sooyeon, Bora Lee, Soon Ji, Lee Deokyoung, Lee Soyeon, Lee Seungmi, Im Jangsoon, Chung Jaeyeon, Choi Minkyung, Han Seokhyun, Hwang Zi, and Heevaak, all of whom were selected through a review process conducted by external art professionals.

Working across a wide range of visual art practices, including painting, video, installation, and public projects, these artists engage with subjects ranging from personal histories to the broader cultural history of humankind.

Crossing the boundaries of media, they transform personal narratives and memories into stories with broader resonance, imagine new forms of humanity, question relationships embedded within materiality, and even attend to the well-being of things we only temporarily borrow. Their diverse practices are more than enough to spark the curiosity of viewers.

“X” and “Y” evoke a wide range of associations, including generation, gender, and unknown variables. 《The Future Opened by X and Y》 offers a prologue to the futures that 18 resident artists of Generation X, often referred to as “Young Forty,” and the Millennial Generation Y will create at Cheongju Art Studio.
