Dorossy Salon presents Ye-eun Min’s solo exhibition 《A Mass That Won’t Mix》 through the 26th. In this solo exhibition, Min presents works that take her concerns about “language” as their subject.

《A Mass That Won’t Mix》 focuses on the universality and specificity, or individuality, of language. The exhibition presents works that visualize the incompleteness and uncertainty of language: when an individual’s thoughts are expressed through language, the universality of language and the definitions of words cause thoughts that were originally specific and individual to become lumped together within the universality of language, thereby limiting their specificity and individuality in the process of communication.

In the work of the same title, the artist installs, in various ways, a pair of corner structures that share the same form but are painted in slightly different colors; a pair of wall lamps that appear to be the same model but contain different traces of time; and a pair of decorative ceramic plates that look similar but, upon closer inspection, differ in many ways and cannot be considered identical products. These objects are arranged so that they can form relationships with and influence one another.

The corner structures, lamps, and plates, which seem the same but are not identical, visualize the universal yet specific and individual languages that each of us expresses through words. The actual objects and their reflections in mirrors visualize reality and unreality.

The artist expands our imagination around what is visible and invisible, what exists and what does not exist. She thinks about things that change depending on where one places the standard, like the two sides of a coin: inside and outside, above and below, light and shadow, past and present, present and future. In doing so, she prompts us to shift our gaze and change our way of thinking, making freer and richer reflection possible.
