《An Atypical Encounter》 is an exhibition composed of the experimental results of the 17th-term resident artists who met through Cheongju Art Studio. The artistic worlds of 14 artists, which cannot be standardized into a single form, have recognized one another’s boundaries, thought together, and coexisted through the resident artist exhibition 《How Did We Come Across One Another?》 and the relay exhibitions.

For artists with different modes of expression, even encountering and communicating with one another in the studio space after moving in is an unfamiliar experience. At times, this unfamiliarity is expressed as visual language and transformed into a tool of communication, or revealed as works using each artist’s own medium. This final results exhibition is held to present the stories of the works of artists who have shared their residency activities in various ways.

The works the artists have continued during the residency period are as diverse as the fragmented personas of contemporary society. While recording and expanding the senses of reality, they blur distinctions and actively immerse themselves in the virtual. Beyond speaking of the pleasure of revealing even the unintended or hidden, they construct specific rituals.

Amid the mixture of the real and the false, the works are completed through one another’s existence. They interpret and explore objects or relationships, collect the world through particles and dust, and explore and transform the purposelessness of life and the surface layer of reality. Through this exhibition, viewers can encounter worlds that have diversified in ways that cannot be standardized.

With the hope that the final results exhibition 《An Atypical Encounter》 will serve as both the conclusion of the residency activities and a starting point for once again breaking down boundaries and moving forward, two events will be held as follows. First, through the Open Studio, artists’ workspaces will be opened to the general public.

This is a program through which visitors can experience the closeness of art and everyday life by speaking with the artists. In addition, in the joint workshop, artists will directly introduce the works they carried out during the residency period.

After the explanations of the works, visitors will also be able to hear professional perspectives from external art specialists and critics. This is a program designed to support the artists in continuing to develop their practices in the future.

Looking forward to what these atypical worlds, standing at the starting point of 2024, will continue next, Cheongju Art Studio concludes its 17th resident artist program.
