Lee Eugene Gallery presents Choi Sujin’s solo exhibition 《Corner Walk, Rainbow Breath》 from January 31 to February 28 as its first exhibition of the new year in 2015. As the youngest artist to hold a solo exhibition at Lee Eugene Gallery to date, Choi presents around 30 recent works that manifest colorful and expressive painting techniques.

The exhibition title 《Corner Walk, Rainbow Breath》 is based on the artist’s personal emotional experiences associated with landscapes captured during travel or walks, from which she mainly receives formal stimulation.

Derived from the reconstruction of another narrative that stems from the artist’s own autobiographical narrative, the landscapes, still lifes, and figures—somewhat ordinary yet unfamiliar, and at times filled with reverie—are Choi Sujin’s main subjects and the mechanisms through which she stages various emotional situations.

Landscapes that one day came to the artist as unusually unfamiliar, such as bumpy ground and dense trees, stones or stone towers containing wishes, and scenes casually or meaningfully placed in front of houses, are first recorded as images through immediate photography. These photographic images then function, in the process of being transferred into painting, as tools that draw out the memories and feelings of that moment.

The works in this exhibition allow us to witness from various angles the artist’s internal change: after 2012, she gradually moved away from the emotions of anxiety, confusion, helplessness, and melancholy that had stood out in earlier work, and began to adopt the gaze of an “observer” toward the outside and the real world.

This is easily seen in the tendency for landscapes, once merely backgrounds, to become more prominent as subjects in recent works; in the reduced presence of human figures and the emergence of animals, plants, and characters as protagonists, or of only traces of figures appearing in the paintings; and in expressive qualities such as richer and more varied colors and bolder brushstrokes.

The phrase “rainbow breath” in the exhibition title originates from the artist’s ongoing awareness of the act of breathing in everyday life. It developed from the artist’s imaginative idea that the breaths one takes during intense internal reactions, breaths different from ordinary ones, may have various kinds of breath like the spectrum of a rainbow.

“Corner walk” is a phrase that comes from the artist’s personal experience of being placed, inside her studio, in a situation where she had to walk here and there among the corners of landscapes reconstructed within a square frame, after external landscapes were captured in photographs and transferred into the picture plane.

The artist encounters, in these newly varied landscapes where fragments of emotion, impulse, and situation overlap, the breaking down of the boundary between form and abstraction, and hopes that the walks she has experienced may become other walks for other people.
