White Block Residency in Cheonan presents the showcase exhibition 《OLD & NEW》, featuring eight artists selected for the 10th residency term in 2023. This showcase marks the beginning of their creative activities at the residency and introduces their practices to the public.

Unlike other residency programs that operate under predefined themes—such as locality, environment, or community—White Block Residency encourages participating artists to deepen and evolve the direction of their own ongoing practices.

The eight 10th-term resident artists featured in this exhibition span generations from the 1970s to the 1990s and include both emerging and mid-career artists who play active roles in the Korean contemporary art scene. They are: Kang Chulkyu (painting), Goo Na (painting, sculpture), Sejin Kim (media), Park Mirye (painting, drawing), Seo Wanho (painting), Woo Minjung (painting), Lim Heejae (painting), and Heo Chanmi (painting).

《OLD & NEW》 revisits works from the past that laid the foundation for each artist’s current identity and practice—works from which their present selves emerged. Just as the present stems from the past and becomes the past of the future, the artwork itself becomes the medium that connects an artist’s past, present, and future.

By presenting works that most intimately reflect or distance themselves from the artist’s current position, the exhibition invites each participant to reflect on their own trajectory in art. Through this process, the exhibition becomes a moment to trace and reexamine the time embedded in each artist’s practice.
