PAGEROOM8, founded in 2018, is a curator-led independent enterprise that explores the organic relationship between exhibitions and books. 《Shadow Esquisse》 is a long-term project developed as a series of exhibitions, conceived to identify each artist’s signature gestures through “elements of drawing.”

The title “Shadow Esquisse” takes the shadow as its central motif. To make an esquisse of a shadow—something that belongs to oneself yet resists being clearly defined—metaphorically evokes the artist’s process of allowing forms to settle deeply within over an extended period before intuitively shaping a distinctive visual language.

As the second exhibition in the series, Moonassi and Son Seon–Kyung present the two-person exhibition 《In May》, centered on the theme of “anxiety.” Through conversations about their recent concerns, the two artists came to identify anxiety as a shared emotion to be conveyed through images.

Moonassi is known for translating philosophical and weighty themes such as self-reflection into visual forms that combine profound insight with points of empathy accessible to anyone, much like his artist name, which means “there is no self.” Works such as The Event Called Me and Intoxicated by Myself feature images that suggest both the substance of the self and the self that lies beyond it.

His technical command—including delicate ink lines that construct images with minute areas deliberately left unpainted, and deep achromatic tones—provides the foundation for the broad emotional resonance of his work.

Son Seon–Kyung has previously imagined the emotion of “anxiety” as possessing physical weight and explored it through the motif of stone. Her practice is characterized by consciously observing everyday actions, repeatedly staging them, and rendering them as looping black-and-white drawing animations.

Images that seem to confront her own anxiety offer a form of silent consolation: a stone floating in zero gravity, a girl holding a stone while standing on a railing that rotates like the hands of a clock, and the eventual transformation of the weighted stone of anxiety into multicolored dust suspended in the air.

Rather than seeking to resolve anxiety, the two artists seem to locate its presence within the inner self or everyday life and remain fully within it, observing it as it is.

Moonassi and Son Seon–Kyung’s exhibition 《Shadow Esquisse - In May》 reveals a quiet site in which each artist calmly confronts and shares, through images, the anxiety silently lodged within. It is hoped that the exhibition will allow us to briefly set down the pressure caused by anxiety today, and that the anxieties of May may be eased through the act of sharing them.
