Space Willing N Dealing presents Sejun Lee’s solo exhibition 《Weltanschauung》(Space Willing N Dealing, 2019) from May 9 to June 7, 2019. Artist Sejun Lee has primarily used brilliant colors and his own distinctive mode of expression to search for an answer to the rather weighty question, “What is this world we live in?”

In doing so, he has expressed a method of applying the form of painting to the structure of the world. In this exhibition, he searches for clues from microscopic landscapes, collects each individual’s perspective on the world—in other words, each person’s worldview—and uses conflicting or similar ideas to construct a new world, which he then contains on the canvas.

Weltanschauung literally means a viewpoint or framework through which one perceives the world. In general, within creative works, “worldview” is sometimes used synonymously with “setting,” but this exhibition seeks to visually present the subjective worldviews formed through each individual’s life.

The artist’s ongoing question, “How is an individual worldview formed within one world?” goes beyond simply recognizing fragmentary images, and leads him to express the structures and appearances of this world—collected through his own lens—as a single painting.

Through this exhibition, the artist seeks to present works that collect and visually express various cosmologies and worldviews from religion and mythology, genre novels, films, and personally created settings. Even though we may live in the same single world, each of us perceives and defines our own world differently.

Interested in how people’s modes of behavior, attitudes, purposes in life, and aspirations change according to such perceptions, the artist collects and accumulates those scenes and unfolds them again on canvas as a single worldview. His various worldviews reveal conflicting and mutually incompatible characteristics.

The paintings and installation works made using these references lead viewers to reflect on what they believe in and what they consider absurd. In that process, viewers may also come to realize that what they believe in might feel to someone else like a far-fetched novel.
