Audio Visual Pavilion’s special exhibition 3X3 is an extension of last year’s summer exhibition, 2X2. 2X2 began from the curiosity of what would happen when an artist collaborates with another artist and produced an exhibition—what would the outcome of their decision be? Following their process, how would they decide what role each would play, of themselves and of their own works?

Furthermore, what kind of exhibition would this process construct? 3X3 is a series of three exhibitions, each made through the collaboration of three individuals—two artists and one curator. Maintaining the premise of 2X2 (wherein two artists participate), 3X3 is an extended edition of 2X2, with the addition of the participation of a curator in each exhibition.

3X3 asks the three curators to think about their current interests and provides a time and space to realize their ideas in the form of an exhibition. The three curators either conceptualized the exhibitions or joined in on the process in the middle. In each of the three exhibitions, the role and mode of participation of the curator was different. The subject matter and ways of presentation of each exhibition also differed.

Although they share the same exhibition space and have subsequent presentations during the autumn of 2018, all exhibitions are presented in different manners. What binds them together is only the fact that there are three different structures in the process and presentation of the exhibitions. Throughout the process of preparing for each of the exhibitions, Audio Visual Pavilion asked them to record or to recollect the process of preparation and their thoughts and concerns regarding their roles as organizers.

The three curators invited by Audio Visual Pavilion are Jihyun Shin, Konno Yuki, and Hiji Noh. Each respectively organize an exhibition with Hana Kim and Jeongsoo Lim, with Eugene Jung and Kensuke Sugimoto, and with Kyeong-eui Moon and Nahm Hyun. In Paintings and Sculptures curator Jihyun Shin aims to illuminate two mediums that have long been discussed through the glyph, ‘&.’ Organizing the exhibition titled After 10.12, curator Konno Yuki sees the role of an exhibition as a stereoscope that refracts more than two distant yet similar worlds. Curator Hiji Noh’s collection-based exhibition Hiji’s House leads us to think about the decisions of why she has collected these artworks and why she shows them now.

After the closing of 3X3, Audio Visual Pavilion will conduct ‘Audio Visual Activities’ with the three curators. During this time we will discuss the curators’ concrete answers to the questions raised by Audio Visual Pavilion.
