The exhibition 《Memory·Space》 at ARKO Art Center revisits memories surrounding the institution through the lens of contemporary artists, aiming to reactivate and reconnect the museum’s space by summoning these memories back into its present context. Space derives its meaning and identity through the people who use and occupy it, the surrounding environment, and the layers of time it has witnessed.

Located in Marronnier Park—once the site of Seoul National University’s College of Liberal Arts and a key location in Korea’s democratization movement, as well as a symbolic space for youth culture and civic leisure—ARKO Art Center has long supported generations of artists.

This exhibition focuses on various forms of ‘memory’ shaped around the art center, which has both witnessed and responded to the socio-political changes of its time. Through this focus, it reflects on the role of the artist in conceptualizing and recording the history of a place—offering an alternative to the work of traditional historians.

《Memory·Space》 transforms the ARKO Art Center, on the eve of its 50th anniversary, into an immersive experience that extends beyond the exhibition halls. Specially commissioned works are installed throughout the entire building—including the main gallery, Archive Lounge, Project Space, outdoor lobby, as well as transitional areas like corridors, staircases, and restrooms—inviting viewers to encounter the space in a renewed light.
