Hakgojae Gallery presents the group exhibition 《Motif》 at its New Building from November 28 (Wed) to December 30 (Sun), 2018. Following the exhibitions 《Intuition 2017》 held last year and 《Intuition》 in 2010, this show marks the gallery’s third group exhibition spotlighting emerging artists.

While the previous exhibitions centered around “intuition” as a fundamental condition of artistic creation, this year’s exhibition delves into the concept of “motif” to examine the logic and narratives developed by a new generation of contemporary artists. A motif is both the starting point of a narrative and the driving force of creation. Through the work of emerging artists who are beginning to establish distinctive perspectives and modes of expression, Hakgojae seeks to re-examine the current landscape of our time.

The exhibition features five young artists: RohwaJeong (b. 1981), Hejum Bä (b. 1987), Jeongsu Woo (b. 1986), Eunsae Lee (b. 1987), and Heejoon Lee (b. 1988). While highlighting each artist’s unique artistic world, the exhibition is also curated to form a cohesive dialogue under the shared theme of “motif.”

RohwaJeong and Jeongsu Woo recently participated in 《The 12th Gwangju Biennale: Imagined Borders》(2018). Hejum Bä gained attention as a selected artist of the OCI Young Creatives (2018, OCI Museum of Art).

Eunsae Lee held a well-received solo exhibition 《Monsters of the Night》(2018) at Alternative Space LOOP, and Heejoon Lee took part in the widely discussed art market 《Union Art Fair: Let’s Make Together》(2018), garnering significant attention. The exhibition text is contributed by art critic Woong Nam, recipient of the 2nd SeMA Hana Art Criticism Award.
