Galerie ERD Busan presents Mina Ham’s ninth solo exhibition 《ID Picture》 from Friday, May 5 to Sunday, May 28, 2023.

In this solo exhibition, beginning with the ‘ID picture’ series, fictional figures and spaces appear in the works based on figures that remain in the artist’s memory.

Through this solo exhibition, Mina Ham expresses figures who are not beings in need of protection or care, but strong and confident individuals. By rendering the skin tones of the figures on canvas in a cold grayish hue, she seeks to show a composed and rational attitude.

Forms of burning flames or crashing waves also reveal their energy, while conveying a sense of solidarity in which the figures do not avoid harsh situations, but merge into them or walk into them together.

The ‘ID picture’ and ‘Trigger’ series presented in this solo exhibition deal with aspects of adolescence that are not static, but rather outwardly expressive and unpredictable in where they might spring toward.

The ‘ID picture’ series presents rows of faces of young children with rather gloomy expressions within canvases that resemble ID photographs. These faces may be figures from graduation albums or missing-person posters, or they may become awkward, stiff, or playful figures captured in unmanned photo booths.

In the ‘Trigger’ series, the figures hold guns and take poses of defense or aiming at an opponent. However, the guns in the works are not depicted for the purpose of shooting someone, but contain the dictionary meaning of “aim,” as in taking aim, or aiming to achieve something. The guns Mina Ham paints are also triggers filled with desire, courage, and hope toward something one wishes to achieve, and they function as a kind of device.

Mina Ham continues her practice through the act of painting while passing through emotions of the past and present, and through this, she seeks to resolve latent trauma and express freedom.
