Thirty Years of the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize Alongside Korean Art

The JoongAng Fine Arts Prize is one of Korea’s leading privately organized art competitions, held annually by JoongAng Ilbo since 1978. Launched under the slogan “Opening a New Era for Korean Art,” the competition began with what was then the highest prize money and benefits offered by any art award in Korea. It quickly became a coveted platform where emerging artists could gain widespread attention and launch their careers.

Within its first decade, the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize produced numerous artists who would go on to become major figures in Korean contemporary art, including Park Daesung (Grand Prize, 2nd edition), Lee Sook Ja (Grand Prize, 3rd edition), Ji Seok Cheol (Encouragement Prize, 1st edition), Kim Changyoung (Grand Prize, 3rd edition), Lee Chungwoon (Grand Prize, 5th edition), Lee Jonggu (Encouragement Prize, 6th edition), Kim Sundoo (Grand Prize, 7th edition), Lee Ki Moon (Grand Prize, 9th edition), Choi Jeonghwa (Grand Prize, 10th edition), Moon Bong Sun (Grand Prize, 10th edition), Hong Su-ja (Grand Prize, 12th edition), Kim Foon (Grand Prize, 12th edition), Hwang Jaihyoung (Encouragement Prize, 5th edition), and Jung Jae Chul (Encouragement Prize, 10th edition).

The 2014 JoongAng Fine Arts Prize: Ten Selected Artists of the Year

The ten selected artists of this year’s JoongAng Fine Arts Prize have each been provided with an individual exhibition space in which to present their work.

Ranging from artists who have gradually established their presence through solo and invitational exhibitions in Korea and abroad to those making their debut through the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize, the exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter the vibrant, thoughtful, and engaging practices of a new generation of artists. Together, their works provide a glimpse of both the present and the future of contemporary Korean art.

Continuous Change to Embrace the Creative Energy of Emerging Artists

In order to more actively reflect the rapidly changing landscape of contemporary art, the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize introduced the Selected Artist system in 2005. Through this initiative, the competition moved beyond the conventional model of evaluating individual works and evolved into a platform that encourages artistic creativity while supporting both the present and future development of artists.

Judging is conducted solely on the basis of artistic merit, without restrictions related to age, educational background, gender, or career history. The jury, composed of exhibition curators, critics, and art theorists, has been widely recognized for maintaining both transparency and fairness throughout the selection process.

Beginning with the 31st edition in 2009, photography, which had previously occupied an ambiguous position within the painting category, was incorporated into the two-dimensional section, while new media and video were established as independent categories to allow for more specialized evaluation.

Furthermore, beginning with the 35th edition in 2013, presentation reviews were added to create a more in-depth assessment process. Through these ongoing developments, artists selected by the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize have gone on to participate in a wide range of curated exhibitions and residency programs, establishing active and distinguished careers.

Through its diverse and rigorous multi-stage review process, the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize will continue to identify and cultivate artists with exceptional potential, helping them develop into significant figures in contemporary art.

Transparent Evaluation and Selection of Award Recipients

The ten selected artists of the 2014 edition were chosen through portfolio and presentation reviews conducted by the competition’s steering committee member and jury: Kim Boggi (President of Art in Culture), Nathalie Boseul Shin (Curator, Total Museum of Contemporary Art), Yoo Jinsang (Professor, Kaywon University of Art and Design), and Jung Hyun (Art Critic).

Earlier in the year, artists were first selected through a portfolio review process. Following a series of transparent and multi-stage evaluations, including presentation reviews designed to identify artists with outstanding potential, ten artists were ultimately chosen as the Selected Artists of the Year.

On September 1, the jury will review the exhibition works presented by the ten Selected Artists of the Year and will determine the recipients of the Grand Prize (one artist) and the Excellence Prize (one artist), who will receive the competition’s highest honors.
