Cheongju Museum of Art is holding its first exhibition of the year, the collection exhibition 《Sense of Direction》, until April 16.

In this collection exhibition, among the 399 works the museum has collected since its opening in 2016, 175 works by 108 artists are presented, including previously undisclosed new acquisitions collected in 2022, allowing viewers to examine the flow and value of art in Cheongju.

The first floor sheds light on the early formation of Cheongju art after the 1940s around the time of Korea’s liberation, beginning with An Seunggak. Works by An Seunggak, acquired through donation in 2022, are presented together with the ‘Water’ series by his son An Youngil.

Works by representative artists across Chungbuk, including Jung Jinguk, Chung Chang-Sup, Yun Hyong-Keun, Lim Jik-Soon, Ha Dong-Chul, Lee Wanho, and Kim Jaegwan, are also exhibited.

In the second-floor exhibition hall, visitors can see representative works by mid-career artists from the Cheongju region, whose practices developed into various genres of contemporary art from the 1970s, after local art colleges were established, through the 1980s and 1990s. Works such as Kim Unki’s photography series from the 1970s and works by Kim Joonkwon, Lee Youjung, and So Youngran are presented.

The final exhibition hall on the third floor introduces the emergence of a new generation in Cheongju art after the 2000s through the Cheongju Art Studio Collection. It consists of representative works by artists who were residents of the studio, including Woojung Hoh, Park Kyungjong, and Jung Jihyun.

Lee Sangbong, director of Cheongju Museum of Art, stated, “This exhibition is an opportunity to verify the direction of the museum’s collection over the past seven years.”

Meanwhile, this is the third collection exhibition since Cheongju Museum of Art opened on July 1, 2016. While the first collection exhibition in 2020 introduced the direction and achievements of the museum’s collection, the second collection exhibition in 2022 became an opportunity to revisit the meaning of donation by presenting new acquisitions centered on works donated in 2020–2021.
