Art Space Boan 1942 in Tongui-dong presents 《A Report to an Academy》, a solo exhibition by Seungwon Park that reexamines the finitude of human existence through performative acts that lay bare the physical limitations of the body.

The exhibition title, A Report to an Academy(Ein Bericht für eine Akademie), references the short story by Franz Kafka in which a monkey, captured by humans, learns to imitate and acquire human behavior in order to enter society, and is later invited to speak before an academic institution about his former life as a free ape.

In Kafka’s narrative, the monkey explains that through desperate effort he became humanized and thereby able to survive within society, while simultaneously implying that humans, too, are endlessly compelled to strive in order to remain functioning members of society.

In exchange for acquiring a practical mode of existence necessary for survival, the monkey comes to long for the freedom of his past — a freedom associated with instinctive and primitive behavior. Yet the lecture ultimately reveals that humans themselves have long lived according to deeply internalized systems of convention and regulation.

Human beings exist within systems of social norms, yet they are also autonomous subjects capable of shaping and choosing their own lives. Nevertheless, countless institutional structures regulate and suppress human thought and behavior.

Contemporary individuals increasingly assess and define their social positions through externally imposed standards rather than through their own sense of self or values. In this process, the biological and existential reality of the “human” has gradually been forgotten.

As subjective agency becomes diminished and repressed by society, confusion surrounding the value and substance of existence inevitably emerges. Yet human beings continue striving toward the pursuit of an authentic self and the search for new systems of value. Through performative acts that explicitly expose the physical limits of the body, 《A Report to an Academy》 reconsiders this condition of human finitude.

Through the exhibition, Seungwon Park seeks to evoke the neglected reality of human existence that has long been overlooked, while simultaneously posing a question to viewers: what direction should a truly “human” life aspire toward in the era to come?
