d/p presents Cha Ji Ryang’s solo exhibition 《dream pop》 from December 1 to 31, 2022. Cha Ji Ryang has created works that reveal the relationship between systems and individuals, or generate vibrations at their boundaries, both inside and outside the systems of society and art.

Having continued projects on systems at times from within them, and at other times from distant views encountered while traveling, the artist prepared this exhibition 《dream pop》 in a space where he stopped traveling and stayed.

The exhibition title “dream pop” evokes a state of absorption shared by players and audiences who relax their bodies and perform on a stage floating somewhere between dreaming and waking. In this exhibition, the artist explores new passages and flows that appear and disappear while erasing the boundary between fantasy and reality.

He visualizes the murmurings of “co-performers,” whom he calls “subjects of artistic occurrence,” and sets up an environment in which viewers can remain within an experience where multiple perspectives and memories gather and diverge in the exhibition space.

The video installation work Surfing spatially stages audiovisual waves and visualizes the responses of various subjects to the “line” appearing in the video. In the video work There is no teacher here, the artist monologues about the beginning and journey of his practice, its pause, return, and hope, while calling to mind the system to which he belongs.

This series of works is staged in a venue divided into two spaces, which appear open as though veiled by the scattering of light that passes askew between them. As an environmental setting for the exhibition space, and as suggested by the exhibition title “dream pop,” the artist attempts to dream a state in which one forgets the “I,” and in which the perspectives and memories of non-singular subjects overlap and are shared.
