National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, initiated the annual 《Artist of the Year》 exhibition in 1995 to shed light on artists who propose new directivities in the future of Korean art, by stimulating their creative inspirations and offering them the opportunity to share their growth and potential in art with the public.

The museum selected Suh Yong-sun as the 2009 Artist of the Year. Renowned for his works dealing with diverse range of subjects including portraits, landscapes, history, war and mythology, Suh is particularly acclaimed for the series which visualizes events from the history and human crowds in the city. Rising to stardom in early 1980s through his series of pine tree paintings, Suh started to paint history-based works and series depicting city people from mid-1980s.

Reconstructing the space in the flat paintings by approaching the fundamental issues in painting through concrete subjects that have important meaning in the Korean system of symbols, Suh portrays the historical turbulence and the conflicts of human existence in it. Suh's interest in historical time led to his interest in the space of the city, dynamically expressing the absurd existence of the wandering city people through tightly structured composition and intense colors and texture.

These works elicit reflections on the existential pains of individuals caught in history’s maelstrom, and the anxious inner turmoil of people living in the highly intense pressure of expanding contemporary cities. Piecing together the fragments of experiences through the continuity of memory and consciousness, the artist demonstrates his subconscious impulse to reject the symbolic system that is enforced for order in the inhumane city and history. Suh transforms the question of human existence into a stylistic formative language through his works of constructive surface, visually mesmerizing colors, and defiant rough texture.

In these remarkable works, human desires intersect and conflict with each other. Suh induces insightful introspection on life by imparting profound thought process in the long period of human intellectual and creative activities.

This exhibition explores the various figures who have struggled to understand the meaning of existence in history, retracing the expansive panorama of pains and sufferings of human history.

Suh pursues his art practice through sincere exploration based on anthropological research and investigation, in the chaotic contemporary art world that runs rampant with superficial sensationalism that lacks depth. Such attitude of the artist, a rare kind in the world, has become an inspiration for many artists today.

In its continual efforts to present artists with sincere and persistent efforts, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, has selected Suh Yong-sun, an artist whose very existence defines the essence of an artist, as the 2009 Artist of the Year.
