The Artist © Haegue Yang

Artist Haegue Yang has been selected as the recipient of the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (Presidential Citation) in the Visual Arts category, presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Do Jong-hwan).

The Ministry announced a total of 31 honorees as contributors to the development of arts and culture in 2018, including recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit, the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award, and the Today’s Young Artist Award. The Culture and Arts Award, which Yang received, is granted to one recipient in each of five categories—culture, literature, visual arts, music, and theatre & dance. The award ceremony will take place on October 24 at 2 p.m. at the Multi-Project Hall of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.

Haegue Yang has explored and reflected on the hybrid cultural conditions that exist across different regions of the world through her installations, articulating themes such as “boundaries” and “otherness” with a distinct formal language. Utilizing a wide range of media—including her large-scale venetian blind sculptures, painting, installation, and video—she has constructed a unique artistic practice that engages with the historical, cultural, and political contexts surrounding individuals and communities.

This year, a major retrospective titled 《ETA 1994–2018》 was presented at Museum Ludwig in Germany, showcasing approximately 140 works and offering a comprehensive view of Yang’s 25-year artistic career. Alongside the exhibition, a catalogue raisonné encompassing early works, major series, and key recent works was also published.

Beginning with her first solo exhibition in Frankfurt in 1994, Yang has held exhibitions at major institutions including the Walker Art Center (2009), the New Museum, New York (2010), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2011), Aspen Art Museum (2011), Haus der Kunst, Munich (2012), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg (2013), Bergen Kunsthall (2013), Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (2015), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (2015), Centre Pompidou (2016), and Museum Ludwig (2018).

In 2009, she was selected as the artist representing the Korean Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, and in 2018 she received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize in Germany. Having previously served as a professor at Malmö Art Academy in Sweden, Yang is currently a full professor in the Fine Arts department at her alma mater, Städelschule in Germany.

Meanwhile, Haegue Yang is currently presenting a solo exhibition 《Chronotopic Traverses》 at La Panacée, a contemporary art center in Montpellier, France, on view through January 13. She will also present three works from her sculptural series ‘Sol LeWitt Vehicles’ (2018) at the FIAC Projects section of the 45th FIAC art fair, held at the Petit Palais in Paris from October 17 to 21. In addition, her first solo exhibition in Italy, 《Furla Series #02 Haegue Yang: Tightrope Walking and Its Wordless Shadow》, is on view at La Triennale di Milano through November 4.
