Internationally renowned installation artist Haegue Yang (46) has been selected as the recipient of next year’s Wolfgang Hahn Prize, a prestigious German art award, according to Kukje Gallery on the 5th.

Established in 1994 by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst, which supports Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Wolfgang Hahn Prize is awarded annually to mid-career artists who have played a leading role in the development of contemporary art.

This marks the first time an Asian female artist has received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize.

Yang will receive a prize of €100,000 (approximately KRW 134.3 million), part of which will be used by Museum Ludwig in Cologne to acquire a work by the artist.

The jury included Christina Végh, director of the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover; Robert Müller-Grünow, chairman of the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst; Yilmaz Dziewior, director of Museum Ludwig; art historian Mayen Beckmann; and collector Sabine DuMont Schütte.

In her jury statement, Végh remarked, “Haegue Yang’s work not only expands the concepts of sculpture and installation but also juxtaposes contradictory and opposing worldviews, generating a synergy that achieves balance rather than conflict.”

Museum Ludwig will present a major retrospective titled 《ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)》 from April 18 for eight months, showcasing 25 years of the artist’s practice.

Known for her large-scale installations and sculptural works, Yang has recently held solo exhibitions at major institutions including the Centre Pompidou in France and Kunsthaus Graz in Austria, while also being appointed as a full professor in the Fine Arts department at Städelschule in Frankfurt, further expanding her active international career.
