Gazing on and on and on. That is how time goes. Artists spend such a long period of time with objects. In the meantime, the objects reside in their heart. At last, their image is visualized in their work. Artists Doyeon Gwon and Lee Jinju that treaded on their own path to narrow their distance with objects encounter one another and walk together at 《Description》.

The word “description” implies the entire process of how they have observed objects for long, and have produced them into objects in their photography and paintings. What is it that they tried to describe and convey to us?

When you are first surrounded by the darkness, you can see nothing. And yet, as you endure the time by not trying to take any action, you get to see more and more. What Gwon sees is the very darkness. He walks into the darkness of the wilderness outside where the human civilization has lightened things up.

He then spends a long time with those that are getting by each day in their own way in the harsh reality. The time spent as such appears in the forms of crows and deer encountered in a deep forest at night, and abandoned dogs seen during his childhood. Their image is not something transient but the real existence engraved in his heart. His work embodies the entire circle of their life and death as he sees it all.

Meanwhile, Lee Jinju pays attention to banalities filling up each and every day. She carefully observes some objects she came to look at one day, and projects them on her canvas. A hand drawn in her work guides the audience to look at the five fingers, wrinkles in between, splinters next to nails, fine hair covering the skin and subcutaneous blood vessels.

Such an expression evoking unfamiliar emotions for being too detailed visualizes an image happening in her heart while she gazed at objects, instead of their appearance. Objects that simply stayed around her are reborn into special beings that cannot be overlooked as her sight falls on them. Their beings await countless interpretation as they evoke emotions with numerous layers of meanings and narratives.

What you get to know through a long gaze. It is what Doyeon Gwon and Lee Jinju are to describe. That is why their description embodies their genuine attitude objects and narratives generated out of the time together. A closer look at something by spending time on it, and empathizing with the being by penetrating into their heart deeper and deeper.

The sight imbues warmth, the hands that reach out show delicateness, and the image of the beings conveyed as such touch people’s heart. The image being conjured up by gazing at their 《Description》. It would be a genuine image of some being they described and I came to know.
